To customize either the Menubar or the Toolbar, click on the pulldown at the far right of each.

Customize the Menubar

Click on the pulldown at the far right of the window, on the same line as the main menu. Then click on Add or Remove Buttons. The menu that appears is divided into two sections, of which the first is a list of all of the possible menus that can appear on the Menubar. The default setup is to include all of them, so initially each item will have a checkmark to the left. To remove a menu from the Menubar, click that item on the list. To restore a menu to the Menubar - assuming that there is no checkmark to the left of its name on the list - click it again.

To restore the Menubar to its default contents, click Reset Toolbar. Since you are in the pulldown for the Menubar, this only affects the Menubar.

Customize the Toolbar

Click on the pulldown at the far right of the Toolbar line. Then click on Add or Remove Buttons. The menu that appears is divided into two sections, of which the first is a list of all of the buttons that can appear on the Toolbar. The default setup is to include all of them, so initially each item will have a checkmark to the left. To remove a button from the Toolbar, click that item on the list. To restore a button to the Toolbar - assuming that there is no checkmark to the left of its name on the list - click it again.

To restore the Toolbar to its default contents, click Reset Toolbar. Since you are in the pulldown for the Toolbar, this only affects the Toolbar.

Customize...

In the pulldown menu for either the Menubar or the Toolbar, the last command on the list is Customize..., which opens the identical Customize dialog. The quick way to do this is to right-click anywhere on either toolbar and select "Customize".

• Customize - Toolbars

  By default, the Toolbar list includes two items, the Main Menu and the Main Toolbar. The checkbox for the Main Menu is greyed out, indicating that you cannot uncheck this item - the Main Menu will always be present. However, you can uncheck the Main Toolbar, which will remove it from the interface. To restore the Main Toolbar, simply return to this dialog and click the checkbox again.

  There are 4 buttons along the right of the Toolbars tab: New, Rename, Delete and Reset. When either the Main Menu or the Main Toolbar is selected, both Rename and Delete are greyed out, indicating that neither can be deleted or renamed.

  To create a new toolbar, click on New. The Add Toolbar dialog will let you assign a name to the toolbar, and when you click OK a miniature toolbar will appear to the upper left. Switch to the Commands tab (see below) and drag the desired commands into the desired position on your new toolbar. Finally, drag the entire toolbar to one of 4 possible locations: below the Main Toolbar, to the right of it, above it, or above the Main Menu. To move your new toolbar right or left, place the mouse pointer on the vertical row of dots along its left edge, and drag the toolbar to where you wish.

  Once you have created a new toolbar, you can remove it temporarily from the interface, rename it, or delete it completely. Select the new toolbar in the Toolbar list. To remove it temporarily from the interface, click its checkmark box. Click it again to restore the toolbar. To rename your toolbar, click the Rename button. Click Delete to delete it completely.

  To reset the Main Menu or Main Toolbar to the default setup, select it in the Toolbar list and click Reset.

   

• Customize - Commands

  Use the Commands tab to add commands to any toolbar, to remove them or reposition them. The panel on the left lists several categories of commands, while the panel on the right lists the commands in each category. Let's look first at what you'll find in the panel on the right and what the various items represent.

  Commands with an icon at the left will be displayed as an icon as well as the text of the command. Commands with an arrow at the right include a pulldown menu. If the arrow is enclosed in a box, as is the case with several commands in the "File" category, this means that the command will be displayed as a large icon with the text underneath it. If the arrow is not enclosed, the command will be displayed as an icon with its text beside it; in this case, the size of the icon depends on whether "Large icons" are selected on the Options tab (see below). In the "File" category, commands with arrows are displayed with arrows for their accompanying pulldowns; this is not the case with the "Menus" category, since clicking on the command itself will open a menu.

  To add a command to a toolbar, drag it from the panel on the right onto the location desired. Note that this does not remove that item from the list in the panel on the right, where it is always available no matter what you do.

  To remove a command from a toolbar, including any item on the Main Menu or Main Toolbar, drag it from the toolbar to anywhere within the boundaries of the Customize dialog.

  To reposition a command, drag it to a different location on its toolbar or else onto a different toolbar. (When the Customize dialog is open, clicking a command on a toolbar does not launch it, but simply selects it for the operations described in this section.)

  You can also customize the main menus by removing commands from them or adding commands to them. (This applies only to the menus on the Main Menubar, not the pulldowns opened through the arrows beside Toolbar buttons.) To add a command to one of the main menus, drag it from the panel on the right onto the menu's title on the menubar (this causes the menu to open), and drop it where you wish on the menu. To remove a command from one of the main menus, open the menu and drag the command to anywhere within the boundaries of the Customize dialog. To reposition a command on one of the main menus, click on the menu to open it, then drag the command to wherever you wish. Of course, this can only be done when the Customize dialog is open. In the same circumstance, right-clicking on any menu item or toolbar button opens a contextual menu offering additional customizations, such as renaming it or, on a menu, inserting/removing a separator above it.

   

• Customize - Options

  The only item on the Options tab that might be confusing is "Large icons". Selecting or deselecting this item has no effect on the default buttons that appear on the Main Toolbar. However, if you select buttons whose text appears to the right of the icon rather than below it, those icons can be either large or small. As discussed above (second paragraph), certain button-commands listed on the Commands tab are given in two versions, one with an arrow enclosed in a box and one with an arrow that is not in a box. The latter are those whose text will appear to the right of it, and in this case the size of the image is determined by whether or not "Large icons" are selected.
